Breastfeeding and Measles Immune - Kaashvi MediDent | Dr. Vipin Jain

During the pregnancy the maternal antibodies passed to the growing baby across the placenta. It provides the baby with the most significant passive protection during their early weeks to months of life. When the mother is immunised against these diseases during her pregnancy it saves her baby also. Vaccinating in pregnancy is the best way to offer protection to the young infant when they are too young to have been fully vaccinated themselves.

A woman who is breastfeeding can be immunised safely with both inactive vaccines such as tetanus, hepatitis B, and human papillomavirus vaccines, and active vaccines such as measles vaccines.
The measles, vaccine viruses have not been found in breast milk after maternal immunisation. The level of antibodies infants gets from their mother over time, leaving them susceptible until they are vaccinated.

Measles can be very drastic for your baby. It causes fever, rash, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Some complications also include like ear infection, diarrhea, pneumonia, brain damage, and death.

Child Specialist in Noida says, ‘MMR vaccine is safe, and it is very effective at preventing measles’. But like any medicine, Vaccines can have side effects. Most babies who get MMR vaccine do not have any serious problems with it. In fact getting MMR vaccine is much safer than getting measles.

But the MMR vaccine isn't given until a baby is 12 months old is because babies have passive immunity from their mothers against measles. And if giving the vaccine too early when there are live antibodies present may just make the vaccine worthless. The immune system of babies may not be ready until 12 months for the MMR vaccine.
