Oral thrush is a fungal infection, results
from an overgrowth of a fungus called candida albicans. White patches/ spots of
fungus appear anywhere in baby’s mouth.
Oral thrush is painful and makes it hard to eat but not considered contagious.
Thrush in infants is relatively common. But it becomes the cause for concern,
unless it starts interfering with the child’s eating habits or if they keep
losing weight.
Causes
of Thrush
It may occur if the baby taking antibiotics
or a breastfeeding mother taking antibiotics. Babies can also infect the
nipples of breastfeeding mothers that known as nipple thrush.
It causes the pain in both nipples and
breasts after feeds, having previously had no pain after feeding. The pain
could be severe and remains for up to an hour after every feed.
On the other hand, mothers may develop an
infection on their nipples while taking antibiotics or steroids and transfer
the infection to their babies while breastfeeding.
To
prevent thrush:
- Sterilise dummies/pacifiers and toys regularly that your baby puts in their mouth.
- Sterilise bottles and other feeding equipment regularly.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after and before changing your baby's nappy.
